I saw a dead butterfly, laying on the sidewalk

     (Are you asleep? Fluttering away in some insolent daydream - ?)

An ornament even in death,
 Something which rough hands pet and prod
  Something which gentler hands deem too precious to touch

     (Is that all you've existed for? Sought after, chased, submitting only to death?)

            (Life;
     It's just like a dead butterfly,
          so pretty and pathetic)
"Yesterday, I saw a dead butterfly, laying on the sidewalk..."

Lovely. When I first saw the title, I thought- macabre. Somehow, you made it fit well enough though. Reminds me of the first time I touched a butterfly- it landed on my finger. When I went to touch it, I was horrified, the dust simply falling away, the wing crumbling beneath my touch. I kept it, and when it died, I secretly took a box of matches from the kitchen, burnt it, and watched the ashes, scattering in the wind.

The last stanza in particular was marvelous.
